Canada

Canada is the second largest country in the world. Canada has a multicultural population of over 32 million. There are over 100 nationalities now living in Canada. There are two official languages, English and French.

Canada is a major industrial country, a member of the G8 group and other international organizations. Canada’s major trading partners are in the U.S.A. and the Pacific Rim countries. There are approximately 1,000 CIMA members and students living in Canada.

Entry into Canada

All persons wishing to live and work in Canada must be landed immigrants or hold work permits.

To immigrate to Canada, you should apply to your nearest Canadian High Commission or Embassy. Canada allows approximately 200,000 immigrants into Canada each year. 60% of immigrants come to Ontario. For more info go to: www.cic.gc.ca.

Successful applications will depend on:
1. The quota allocated to your country.
2. Your qualifications and skills.

Employment Agencies

Employment agencies will not consider you until you are a landed immigrant, living in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number. On arrival in Canada, consult the Yellow Pages for the employment agency that you think best serves your needs.

Employment Opportunities

Opportunities for employment are currently good in major cities of Ontario and Alberta.

Salaries for CIMA members vary from $ 40,000. to $100,000. Annually, depending on your qualifications and experience. The cost of living in Canada is lower than the UK. Inflation is minimal.

Employers are looking for people with Canadian experience. For this reason, you may find it difficult to get your first job.

We recommend that you seek a temporary or contract position initially to gain Canadian experience. Many employers recruit contract employees for permanent positions after competence has been proven.

CIMA Designation
The CIMA designation is fairly well known in Canada. It is not necessary for members to seek a Canadian accounting designation in order to be recognized.

Employment Interviews
Members should remember that small companies are not familiar with all the accounting designations. They are looking for a competent, qualified accountant who can take charge and is familiar with the company’s computer system.

Resumes (2 pages max.)
Should be in Canadian format
Should list the major companies, preferably multinationals, where you were previously employed.
Do not mention the countries where the companies are located: Canadian employers are not interested.

Student Members
There are no colleges or universities at this moment that offer CIMA courses. You will have to continue studying by correspondence course. There is a permanent exam centre in Toronto. There are no tuition facilities available to CIMA students.
